Divide y vencerás: Crowdsourcing

El crowdsourcing no es más que la reproducción al infinito de una vieja práctica empresarial conocida como outsourcing –en español, subcontratación o también tercerización- y que conlleva una serie de ventajas y desventajas que muy rara vez se toman en cuenta a la hora de fabricar oraciones rimbombantes para defender su valor, pues hoy por hoy la intención más extendida es la de intentar humanizar un sistema que crea y destruye puestos de trabajo a tal escala que resulta muy complejo explicarlo aquí. La verdad es que un axioma tan sencillo como “a menor coste, mayor beneficio” es lo que mueve al mundo hoy.
Cómo funciona
Una empresa descubre que le resulta proporcionalmente más caro mantener su departamento de diseño que subcontratar a uno o a más diseñadores para satisfacer demandas puntuales. El siguiente paso es eliminar esa sección de su entramado empresarial, aligerando la carga que supone mantener tantos empleados.
Muy lejos nos queda el concepto de capital humano cuando una empresa decide soltar lastre para volar aún “más alto”. Si subcontratar servicios clave resulta una ventaja real para una empresa, no estoy tan seguro de que pueda aplicarse a todos los casos ni a todos los niveles del mismo entramado. Considerando los altos sueldos, prestaciones y otras ventajas que disfrutan los cargos más altos, me pregunto si sería aún más viable subcontratar los servicios de toda la clase ejecutiva de una empresa. Esto ocurre, hasta donde sé, sólo parcialmente. Yendo un poco más allá, supongo que hoy por hoy es perfectamente posible fundar una empresa de tamaño descomunal sin la necesidad de contratar un solo empleado.
Ventajas y desventajas del crowdsourcing
Sin duda alguna, la empresa es la parte que disfruta de más ventajas debido al abaratamiento de sus costes de producción. Frente a una necesidad muy puntual, como puede ser –por ejemplo- diseñar el logo para un nuevo producto, la empresa literalmente arroja su demanda a un océano repleto de diseñadores –unos más capaces que otros- dispuestos a responder a sus necesidades, sirviéndose de sitios tan populares que al término de un corto período de tiempo obtendrá cientos de propuestas de calidad variable de dónde escoger. En este caso me refiero a 99 designs, que funciona como una plataforma basada en la competencia. Por un promedio de 300 US$ y después de pocos días, la empresa habrá satisfecho esa demanda. ¿Desventajas? Que detrás de esos 300US$ hay cientos de trabajadores dedicando miles de horas de trabajo que nadie paga.
Aunque es virtualmente imposible interpretar con claridad cuántas horas de trabajo desperdiciadas es capaz de generar el crowdsourcing, también es cierto que su principal ventaja reside en que su práctica da lugar a oportunidades que de otro modo jamás se presentarían en la escena de algunas personas, y que aun siendo tanto o más capaces que otras, viven realidades muy distintas. Así, donde el crowdsourcing destruye algunas oportunidades también crea otras y elimina ciertos límites o hándicaps. Yo resaltaría esta virtud por encima de cualquier otra, sobre todo porque no sólo significa una verdadera democratización de Internet sino que explica la tendencia más fuerte, más constante y seguramente cada vez más presente dentro del mercado laboral mundial.
Admito que sigue sin agradarme la idea de que detrás de 300 dólares haya 300 personas que representan 3 mil horas de trabajo por minuto -por decir un número al azar- para que sólo el 1% consiga obtener algún beneficio, pero algo me dice que esta tendencia se conciliará cada vez más con nuestros valores humanos, aunque tal vez y sólo tal vez no vivamos lo suficiente para verlo.
